About
My name is Iverson Jack McGlasson aka Jax. I am an award winning studio artist located in Portland Oregon. My studio is named Basement Access Studio. My work centers around drawing, painting, collage and mixed media design. I love the process of making art. I tend to combine divergent elements, lines and colors together in a single piece or series of pieces there-by creating questions, meaning, edginess and even discomfort for my viewers. I have been told that art should evoke, but not provoke. I disagree. I believe that art should follow the dictum of Andy Warhol who said; "Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further."
My art is influenced by cartoons, 1920's prostitutes, gamblers, bookies and filthy streets. Currently I am attracted to Portland Oregon's homeless population, old animation, early jazz, crows and hippies. I admire the true greates of art such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Max Fleisher and Gene Haisley. I feel as though I am an outcast in the world of art because of my age, style and lack of an art degree...and I love it.
How it works
Start with an idea or an inspiration. Think about it awhile. Let it churn and stew. Next consider materials, composition, colors and values. Finally start making marks on the page. Just keep adding marks and colors and designs. Let the piece speak to you. Eventually you will need to walk away. Then come back in a day, a month, a year. Think again, adjust if necessary and then stop once more. Just stop. Be done! Let go and move on to the next piece.
